Three freshly rebuilt and repainted MK Rail SD40M-2s lead Southern Pacific's Eugene to Chicago Q-train east through Rio Grande's Fourth South Yard in Salt Lake City on May 30, 1994. MK Rail rebuilt 133 units for the SP between April 1994 and Feb. 1995 that included new EMD Dash 2-style controls and electrical cabinet, a 3000-horsepower 16-cylinder engine, SD40-2-style radiator cores, and nine-blade radiator cooling fans. The SP 8574 was rebuilt from CNW SD45 No. 971 while the SP 8585 was rebuilt from SP SD45 No. 9130.
