250-tons of Sewing Machine. The behemoth Western Maryland Shay #6 leads Cass Shay #5 in an impressive light power move toward the Cass Yard, with Shays #11 and 4 trailing behind on an adjacent track. Watching the Big Six and the 5 roll slowly past me, with their vertical rods pulsing up and down and that seemingly endless drive shaft spinning smoothly, I couldn't help but think how much this lash-up resembled a giant, 250-ton, industrial sewing machine.
