Whittaker arrival. In a scene that is just classic Cass, the former Meadow River Lumber Co. Heisler #6 makes its entrance into the Whittaker Station at MP 4, complete with the obligatory inky black exhaust plume. At an elevation of 3,264 ft MSL, Whittaker is the destination for some of the Cass Scenic Railroad's daily summer excursions, and a rest stop and way-station for the longer runs to Spruce and Bald Knob. This location includes a food service facility as well as restrooms. In addition, the Mountain State Railroad and Logging Historical Association has built a logging camp display on the site that includes several pieces of rolling stock, including one of the last steam-powered log skidders left in existence. For those traveling with children or those who can't stay for the 5+ hours required to go to Bald Knob, the twice-daily Whittaker Station runs provide an excellent opportunity to experience the history of steam logging railroads.
