Remarks & Notes
A little match race. Cass is famous for its annual Shay races on the triple tracks down at the depot. Those are pretty much heads-up races because none of the Shays has much of a performance advantage on any of the others. Less well-known are the little match races that sometimes take place up on the mountain, on the circle tracks at Spruce. In this little contest, the 1905-vintage Shay #5 was pitted against a Western Maryland F-unit. Now, one might think this wasn't a fair fight, but a race like this is typically handicapped, with the lights turning green early for the slower machine and BOTH machines expected to run at or over their dial-in times. In this contest, the old Shay got a big head start, so when the F got her green light, she poured on the power. The big cab unit is seen here getting ready to blow right by the old coal-burner, and she did in fact cross the finish line first. Unfortunately.......she broke out and the Shay got the win light. LOL! Gimme steam over diesel anytime!
