Triple-heading....mostly because they can. Shay Locomotives 6, 11 and 5 put on a display of mountain muscle, hauling the annual Cass Railfan Special away from the water tanks at Oats Run and up the hill toward Bald Knob. Every year, the Cass Scenic Railway hosts a 3-day railfan weekend in May. Most of the time, a double-header is more than sufficient to pull the daily passenger special, but in 2014, the railroad elected to add a couple of extra cars and a 3rd locomotive. The result was one of the more impressive trains you'll ever see on this railroad. Did the railroad really need three engines on the passenger train this day? Probably not. But with with 5 full-size locomotives hot on this particular weekend....why not?
For aficianados of geared steam engines, it's "almost heaven." Here are some scenes from the park's annual Railfan Weekends, as well as some private charters.
