Remarks & Notes
Norfolk and Western 2-8-8-2 Y6a #2156 stands magnificently under the canopy at the Museum of Transportation in St. Louis. The sole survivor of the Y6 class, this powerful giant once applied brute force to heavy loads on the N&W's mountain grades. The enormous low pressure cylinders at the front received steam already expanded once in the high pressure cylinders at the rear engine. The Y6 locomotives were the superlative mallet compounds, and could operate in simple expansion mode at low speeds to start trains moving with an incredible 166,000 pounds of tractive effort. Compare that to a UP Big Boy's 135,375 pounds of tractive effort. She looks as if you could light a fire and steam her away from the museum. The Y6's must have been awesome machines to witness in action. Word coming today is that 2156 is to be loaned to the Virginia Museum of Transportation in Roanoke, VA.

Pictures of things often unseen in the world of railroading. Interesting equipment, operations, and people that help the railroad go around.
