After being introduced 6 years ago in 2008, one of the newest car designs for the growing double-stack sector is finally making its way into the intermodal pool; FreightCar America's DynaStack 5 unit articulated 40' well car. Constructed from mechanically fastened steel channels along the sides, this car's design cuts out excessive steel to lower the overall weight of the car to 170,200 pounds which is 7000 - 8000 pounds less than that of standard articulated well cars. This lower overall weight allows for a higher load capacity as well as better fuel efficiency. The lack of metal along the sides which creates a skeletal type look should help with loading visibility and also deter "urban artists" the space needed to paint their tag lines. This truss style side offers increases in the areas of strength, durability and fatigue resistance while also deterring would be drifters a space to hide in as they free-ride along the rails. This is the first articulated intermodal car built by FreightCar America and was constructed at their newest facility in Cherokee, Alabama. There is also a 3 unit articulated 53' well design of this type too. This set is part of a 50 car order recently placed by TTX.
