A pint-size train for a pint-size fan. A future RP contributor carefully composes what will be his memory of the only operational Maine 2-foot locomotive as of March, 2014. This little guy is likely to be wearing big-boy clothes by the time he gets to see this engine run again. Kudos to him at his young age to be thinking about capturing the memorable moments in his life. Oh how I wish I had a camera when I was that young.
Maine's 2-foot gauge railroad museums not only preserve what is an important aspect of early 20th century life in the Pine Tree State, but they are also superb tools for generating an interest in history among the very young. Unlike the big, heavy, standard gauge equipment, which can be a little bit intimidating to a small child, the diminutive size of these trains makes them seem much more approachable. They can more easily picture themselves up there in the cab or riding the platforms on the cabooses. Hopefully, a fire was kindled in the mind of a young boy this day. Who knows, in a dozen years or so, it may be him firing #4 on a run around the Portland waterfront.
