Remarks & Notes
The very last unpatched and unrenumbered DRGW unit on the Union Pacific roster, DRGW 5371, is a legitimate last survivor as it rolls downgrade past Castlegate near the bottom of Price River Canyon. 5371 and the trailing SD 40-2 had been dispatched earlier, light engine, from Helper to go west over Soldier Summit and down to Castilla siding near the west base of the pass to retrieve the 3 trailing GE’s and return them to Helper. This turned out to be 5371’s very last trip over Soldier Summit and I caught it on this beautiful winter day after an overnight snow. Action is on the Union Pacific Provo Sub in eastern Utah.
