Remarks & Notes
GC L783 creeps across the 1/2 mile long Ogeechee River trestle in Meldrim,GA. The peaceful scene hides the dark past of this bridge. On June 28th 1959 an eastbound Seaboard Air Line manifest derailed on the trestle sending several cars of LPG into the river. The river was a popular gathering place for locals at the time and an errant spark from a grill ignited the leaking propane gas engulfing the whole area in a sheet of fire in seconds. 23 people died in the accident and today few venture back to this isolated spot.
