The railway line between Volksrust in Mpumalanga and Newcastle in kwaZulu-Natal was first opened in 1891 and today crosses the Drakensberg (Dragon mountains) on its third alignment. Having exited tunnel no.3 (1980 m / 6496 ft), a trio of class 18E's lead a southbound container train from Johannesburg to Durban across the Harte River bridge, 77 metres (252 ft) above the valley floor.
