After spending the last 30 minutes chopping ice from the crossing, the crew of Sumpter Valley's Locomotive 19 slowly guides their 1920 Alco product across Saw Mill Gulch Road. The engineer has one hand on the throttle and the other on the brake stand as he creeps along with his crew mates intently watching for any signs of trouble. They will clear this crossing in just moments, but with less than an hour of daylight remaining, they've still got their work cut out for them. Less than a mile ahead, the grade up to Sumpter Depot is unplowed, and there is yet another crossing just like this one where they will go through the same exercise that they've just finished here. When these dedicated volunteers finally make it back to McEwen this evening, the entire 5-mile line will be ready for the weekend photo charter that will begin the next day.
