Introduced in 1961,the class 35 "Hymeks" were fitted with Maybach MD870 engines,rated at 1740 h.p.,making them ideal mixed traffic locos.101 examples were built,but the fact that they were hydraulics sealed their fate,and the class had disappeared by early 1975.I spent many hours working on these fine machines,including the example in this picture,taken at Horton Road depot,Gloucester,in September 1968.The first member of the class stands with another example,having just arrived from Bristol.
