Remarks & Notes
In 1954, the Clinchfield railroad had finally made the transition from the steam era, to the diesel era. However, that left several steam locomotives, including these 4 E-2 class Challenger type locomotives, based off of a D&H model. Instead of ponying up the cash to pay the trust off, the CRR deemed it would be better to let them sit in the dead line behind the shops until the trust was up, and when that was the case, they were hauled down to a scrapper in Florida and were cut up, marking a sad finale to the steam era on the Clinchfield RR. 35mm slide from my collection, photographer unknown.
