Remarks & Notes
Getting a huge locomotive back on the track can be quite the undertaking. Morning on a hazy, late summer day in September 1983, reveals a Chicago and North Western EMD SD38-2 laying on its side near the Hampton Avenue overpass at Butler Yard in Butler, Wisconsin, with work well underway to right the heavy locomotive. A sideboom dozer is now located on both ends of the locomotive, to be used as anchors and swivel points during the lift. A C&NW Pettibone has brought some ties to be used to protect the rails so a Fiat-Allis FL20 can cross over the tracks. This dozer will be used, along with a steel cable attached to No. 6651’s frame, to pull the locomotive upright. Notice the diamond (crossing) below No. 6651’s lead axle. This locomotive was hit by another movement at this crossing causing the rollover; rule of thumb—only one train can occupy a diamond at the same time!
