Icy Red Clay Creek. The Wilmington & Western Railroad's Alco #98 charges across the icy Red Clay Creek with a passenger consist headed for Hockessin. The route of the old B&O Landenberg Branch snakes back and forth across the creek, crossing it no fewer than nine times on the run from Greenbank to Hockessin.
On this particular day, the two-car passenger train that you see is a Lerro Productions Photo Charter, which did several run-bys at this location. After shooting the conventional bridge wedge up by the trestle, I elected to try hiking downstream for a shot out on the ice floes looking up the river. Several other guys had tried it, but nearly all of them ended up breaking through the ice as they tried to reach this position. Being smaller and lighter than many of them, I elected to try my luck crawling on my stomach, to spread my weight across a larger area. That technique worked. Although I had water all around me...and flowing under me...the ice never so much as cracked, and I was able to get an angle that is normally not achievable without hip-waders or a boat.
