| Westbound on the Pokey mainline, high priority container train, NS I3Q rolls through downtown Welch on its dreary commute across the N&W mainline to Williamson from Bluefield. Welch represents one of the most critical coal mining (and railroading) communities in the peak of the Pocahontas coal market. Due to limited space for residential and commercial development, much of the hillsides were utilized for the building of homes. The access to these very homes is made possible by a unique series of single lane switchbacks. |
