Remarks & Notes
Deep River Landing. The Valley Railroad's logo refers to the operation as "The Connecticut Valley Line", and the right-of-way does indeed follow the shoreline of the Connecticut River. Despite that fact, it is actually a bit difficult to get a photograph of one of the line's tourist trains with the river in the background. The trains normally don't run in the morning and the west side of the line is typically shaded by tall stands of trees, making a sunny-day shot very problematic. On this chilly day in December however, a low overcast made the light much more even, allowing me to shoot a few locations that are impossible at any other time. In this scene, one of the line's "Santa Special" Christmas Trains heads north along the mighty Connecticut River, past the little park at Deep River Landing. During the summer season, Deep River Landing is a popular place for locals to picnic, photograph wildlife and launch pleasure boats. It is also the location where the Valley Railroad's tourist trains connect with the Riverboat Becky Thatcher, which is owned and operated by the Valley Railroad.....the only steam train - riverboat connection in the US.
