Small Town, America
One hundred and ten miles west of Chicago on Santa Fe’s main line is the small town of Toluca in Marshall County. In a view from an abandoned coal mine tailing pile that local residents call “jumbo,” Toluca can cast a spell on the observer. The sweet smell of spring with sprouting trees and fertilized crops; farms and furrowed fields as far as the eye can see; an old water tank telling the world where you are; a farmer riding his tractor down the street after visiting the feed store; the distant sounds of lawn mowers and kids playing outside. And of course, the Santa Fe main line humming with commerce crossing this big country of ours. On the morning on May 19, 1986, an eastbound freight with Conrail run-through power whistles through town, led by rare GE U36B No. 2974. Once the train clears town limits and clamor subsides, the smells, sights and sounds of small town America return once again.
