Remarks & Notes

Looking east on the Western Maryland mainline toward Slatyfork, the Elk River bridge and much of the former mainline rail remain in place, outside of downtown Webster Springs. Coal mining operations as well as numerous timbering operations generated business for the Western Maryland in the early to mid 20th century. A luxurious resort nearby prompted passenger service as well in the early steam era. Webster Springs served as the far southwestern point for any Western Maryland owned operation. Abandoned since the 1970's, much of the right of way and rail remain in place throughout downtown Webster Springs. This represented the former mainline from Webster Springs east to Slatyfork and Spruce, and north from Spruce to Elk River Jct. and eventually Elkins.
