Remarks & Notes
While exploring the abandoned Franklin & Tilton Railroad, I came across a cache of more than a dozen Boston & Maine mileposts, whistle posts, and other concrete posts and signage laying in the adjacent Winnipesaukee River. Each must weigh several hundreds of pounds each. The B&M must have dumped the items at this spot decades ago as fill. The B&M took over operations of the Franklin and Tilton in the 1800s and ran the last train over the line in 1973. The rails are mostly intact, but are currently mostly hidden under a bicycle trail. Note the three holes in this whistle post. Many B&M whistle posts also held flanger boards.
