Trains running south from Lydenburg to Belfast face a climb of 627 metres (2057 ft) in 68 km (42 miles) through mountainous terrain until they reach Nederhorst, the highest point on the railway system in South Africa at 2097 metres (6880 ft) above sea level. These four class 39-200's are twisting and turning their way upgrade to the siding at Santa, which will only provide a brief respite before they tackle the last few km's to the summit.
