And the chase is on..... Denver & Rio Grande Locomotive 315 drifts downhill with her stock extra as she keeps station, a couple of hundred yards behind our Freight Extra 463. As the two photo freights made their way back toward Antonito after a day of photography, the crew of 315 put on a nice little show for those savvy enough to be hanging out on the back platform of the caboose on the 463 train. The line weaved back and forth several times in the stretch from Lava down to Hangman's Trestle, exposing the little stock train to the low-angle afternoon sunlight, and providing some pretty desertscapes, such as the one you see here.
The Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad and the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad are all that remains of the legendary Denver & Rio Grande Western narrow gauge system. Here you'll find some of my favorites from these two beautiful railways.
