A fleet of 20 of these Class 39-200 (EMD GT26CU-3) locomotives is based at Lydenburg to handle the traffic on the Belfast - Steelpoort branch line. On a beautiful late winter morning, four of these 39's pause at Santa siding while working a train of chrome ore from Lydenburg to Belfast. The name Santa is not entirely inappropriate - at an altitude of 1 968 metres (6 456 feet), severe winter weather has been known to bring snow here!
