A southbound coal drag roars out of Pool Point Tunnel in notch 8. From here to Sandy Ridge Tunnel, just north of Dante, VA, it is a steady grade that requires helpers, and with the long coal drags that the Clinchfield would run around this time, it is likely that the pushers were working hard just to keep the train from stalling. 35mm slide from my collection, photographer unknown.
