Seaboard Work Extra 1769 has the (original) Norfolk Southern derrick No. 900 and wrecker outfit in tow approaching Apex, NC. Several hours earlier, just south of this location, Seaboard train No. 75 experienced a massive derailment when recently laid 132 lb. welded rail spread under the fast moving train due to a heat kink caused by unusually high temperatures. Work Extra 1769 will get "workwise" with the NS derrick on the north end of the derailment site, while the Hamlet derrick will approach from the south. The Road Foreman and brakeman are chatting as the train approaches.
