Two Milwaukee Road GP20s take a westbound freight through Hoffman Avenue in St. Paul, Minnesota, on the afternoon of March 22, 1986. With not much room in the area between the multiple tracks below Dayton’s Bluff, Hoffman Avenue tower was built of concrete and located on a structure over one of the tracks. Now abandoned, the tower can be seen in the background, along with the now missing track below. I’d imagine the passing of trains just below your feet was quite the sensation for an operator. Milwaukee Road GP20s were not true EMD-built GP20s, but were GP9s rebuilt and upgraded to 2,000 h.p. locomotives by the road’s own shops.
