Crossing the Codorus. Steam Into History's 9AM excursion charges south over the Codorus Creek en route to Glen Rock and eventually, New Freedom, PA.
The ROW of the Northern Central Railway now coexists with the Heritage Rail Trail County Park, aka PA Bicycle Route J. It's a fairly busy bike path, as well as a route for hiker and runners. It can also be a great way to do some train photography, as you can easily reach spots that would be difficult to get to by car. On the northbound run, a fast biker might be able to outrun the train, at least for short distances. Running tender first, the northbound journey makes all of about 15 mph. Don't let that fool you though. On the southbound run, with the engine facing forward, the track speed is 20 mph and the train is doing every bit of that. If you should stop to take a shot, be sure to look around before you move on, or you could find yourself becoming an ornament on the front of a speeding bike.
