| A class 59 loco stands in the sidings at Southall,one of the outer London suburbs.The loco is stabled between two distinctive local landmarks - on the left is the gasometer (built 1932),whilst on the right is the Victorian water tower,now converted to apartments.On the gasometer are the letters "LH" and an arrow.This was to remind pilots of incoming aircraft using the now closed runway 23 that London Heathrow Airport was ahead.There had been instances of incoming aircraft heading for the much shorter runway at the Royal Air Force base at Northolt !! |
