Remarks & Notes
IN LOVE . . . with abandoned railroads? As I explained in photo no. 435007, the "sulphite bridge" in Franklin, New Hampshire, burned in 1980. The intense heat caused the rails at the south end of the structure to buckle. The fire also charred the heavy timber trusses along the entire length of the trestle. Though my intent this day was to explore the bridge and to learn about its history, these two local teens, with whom I had no conversation, showed up on the scene and seemed to care little about the bridge, or the railroad, or the fire. These teens were engulfed in their own "heat of the moment" (the flames of teenage love) and cared not that I was examining the ancient bridge's construction or taking pictures! I could not help but work them into this view, choosing to make the mangled rails my focal point, using selective focus to give them a little privacy, and yet still ultimately creating an interesting composition. I could go on to say something about the rails symbolizing the twists and turns of teenage life and love in a small, rural town, but that would be taking the metaphors just a little too far. (I reiterate that this image was neither posed nor rehearsed. Ethically, as a former journalist, I believe the most powerful images record reality, rather than alter it.)
