Ed Dickens, Union Pacific Railroad's Manager of Heritage Equipment (better known as the UP's steam program), who had been fireman on Santa Fe 3751's trip from San Bernardino to Los Angeles, climbed out of the cab and was inspecting the engine while the train unloaded at LA’s Union Station. At the same time, the parents of the young man in the engineer overalls wanted him to post in front of the engine, but he was afraid to get too close to such an awesome machine. Ed noticed this, and took the time to make sure the boy was not afraid to get closer, posing with him so that he would not feel quite so overwhelmed by the large, noisy 4-8-4.
