Hoisington yard is jam packed with Southern Pacific trains on September 3, 1995. On the left, a freight led by No. 8668 has one of the crew struggling with a couple of bags of ice on the front platform, and will be soon departing eastbound. This former Missouri Pacific route was how Rio Grande/SP trains got to Kansas City from Colorado’s Tennessee Pass line from Pueblo. The yard is much, much quieter now, with this through main line route severed in two places; abandoned west of Herington to Geneseo, and McCracken to Healy, all in Kansas.
