Passing the torch. One of the stark realities of steam railroad operations is that most of the men who serviced and ran the locomotives in actual service are gone now. Even the first couple of generations of preservation railroaders are rapidly reaching the end of their careers. In order to ensure that the machines which built this country will be around for future generations to appreciate, those who care for them today know that they have a duty to kindle the passion for steam in younger people. Bit by bit, they will pass on the knowledge of their craft, so that some day when they are gone, the history will live on. The Nevada Northern Railway Museum is one place where the passing of the torch is part of the daily routine. For working among the grizzled veterans is a new generation of steam railroaders, many of whom were born half a century after the last main line steam disappeared. On this cold February morning, we find two dedicated museum volunteers from very different generations and backgrounds meeting at the warmest spot in the engine house to discuss the operating plan for the day.
