Remarks & Notes
Four veteran Interstate Railroad employees on the Second Yard Crew pose with their motive power--INT number 25--on a fall afternoon in 1953. The occasion is the last use of the Consolidation. Left to right we have Walt Richardson (conductor), Kale Jervis (fireman), Ken Smith (flagman), Jack Long (brakeman) and Carl Reese (engineer). The 25 came late to the coal-hauling short line, having been acquired from the Southern in March of the previous year. The Interstate had coveted the Richmond-built Ks-3 engines for some time, but Southern wouldn't part with them. Finally, the big road sold four of the engines, which would become Interstate numbers 25-28. The 25 was former Southern 2500, a Richmond (Alco) product of 1926. Alco RS-3s were already on the property, so steam was a goner. Indeed, the 25 and her three sisters would be scrapped at Andover over the next year. (Hank Stuart Photo/Flanary Collection)
