A pair of Canadian National’s custom-designed, cowl-carbodied locomotives pulls a train eastbound at English, Alberta, in Jasper National Park on September 18, 2002. These unique EMDs are equipped with the innovative “Draper taper,” the so-called tapered notch cut into the carbody just behind the cab so the train crew has some sight line backward. This feature was the creation of CN Assistant Chief of Motive Power William L. Draper. On the point is SD60F No. 5532 and trailing is SD50F No. 5439, of which, CN had 64 (SD60F) and 60 (SD50F) of each.
