Remarks & Notes
One of the problems in operating the Amtrak Cardinal over the old North Mountain Subdivision of CSX (today, the Buckingham Branch RR) are the meets with westbound empty hopper trains. Here, number 50 clatters down the jointed steel 3690-foot siding at LaGrange, just over three miles west of the station stop at Staunton. A westbound CSX hopper train holds the main, and will move forward to clear the east switch of the siding as soon as number 50 clears and he gets a signal. That will allow the passenger train to regain the main on the east end, since the tail end of the freight would then be clear of the control point. Meantime, the Amtraker has to traverse the entire length of the siding at Restricted Speed, since it's unsignaled. At the time of the photo, the Cardinal was a Superliner-equipped train.
