| Until the 1989 purchase of C40-8's for coal service the CNW had a very limited amount of success with GE products. The handful of 1968 U30C's were not held in high favor on the CNW. Most of the time they called Cedar Lake Yard in Minneapolis home and ventured to Duluth or Omaha from there. When the CNW first bought the 30 ex N&W C628's they were also placed in the same service and worked with the U-boats for a couple of years before moving on to ore service. The U-boats were not very sound mechanically and surrounded by a sea of high horsepower EMD's they were orphaned from the start.
