Southern Pacific 2472, an immaculately restored 4-6-2 P-8 Class Pacific, threads its way through the target signals at Goldtree, just north of San Luis Obispo, California, as it descends Cuesta Grade. (Note, too, the signal high up the grade in the background, just to the right of the closest signal.) Heading from its (then) home in San Francisco, the engine is hauling the Earth Train to Los Angeles on September 12th, 1992. This would be the 2472's longest outing since being restored.
