Cumberland, MD September, 1987 - At the massive Cumberland Locomotive Facility, a C&O GP-38 sits in the repair bay at the end of its quarterly inspection. During the early CSX era, all 1,100 former Chessie System locomotives made their way to the former B&O's Cumberland backshop every 92 days for their "Q-Line" inspection. It was an all-day process of moving through eight inspection stations that each served a specific purpose in changing oil and filters, inspecting traction motors and wheel flanges, and many other key mechanical items. Locomotives like this one that needed work such as the resizing of flanges and wheel treads were moved to a nearby bay where heavier work could be done. It would not be long before this engine's extra work would include a trip through the paint shop to be renumbered and patched for its new CSX numbers.
