A long Burlington Northern Santa Fe intermodal train snakes its way through Bealville, California, on a hot June 30, 1996. Santa Fe presence is still everywhere, but the third locomotive (a new EMD SD75M) shows signs of change, dressed in Warbonnet red and silver, but lettered for new railroad, BNSF. The train is approaching the old Allard horseshoe curve, and a pair of mid-train helper locomotives can be seen in the background exiting Tunnel 2. The heat of summer has quickly turned the Tehachapi Mountains into a “golden state.”
