Remarks & Notes
Approaching its penultimate stop, the afternoon Sprinter from Fort William glides over Morar Viaduct, constructed in 1897. The river below may not look like much, but it holds the unique distinction of Britain's shortest river, flowing less than a quarter mile from Loch Morar to the sea. The loch is Britain's deepest freshwater body (just over 1,000' deep) and said to be home to "Morag," a taciturn cousin of the much more famous Nessie. In the distance rise the rocky slopes of Cruach Bhuidhe, stripped by the elements of all but the thinnest coating of soils.
