| Hauling more than a Fistful of Dollars Union Pacific's Kellogg Turn is starting over the Lake Chatcolet causeway returning to Spokane, WA. Today's train has 8 cars in tow, 7 of which contain silver ore from the Lucky Friday and Bunker Hill mines from the Kellogg mining district. It's reported this branchline operation held on for as long as it did account the silver content extracted from these ores was highly lucrative business for the UP and the lumber business along the way was icing on the cake. If you look closely above the small cabin on the shoreline you can see a bridge on the hillside that was part of the Milwaukee Road's Pacific Coast Extension. This former MILW right of way is still in operation today as the St. Maries River Railroad. |
