A proud man and his machine: The driver of haul locomotive LM409 poses in the cab door for a photo somewhere in the Bloomhill bogs of Co. Offaly. The 3-foot-gauge track under the loco is temporary, laid to reach the peat field that's being harvested; in a few weeks it'll be taken up and moved elsewhere in the bogs. The tarp is to distribute the weight of the track and prevent it from being literally swallowed by the bog -- notice how the ties have already sunk below ground level.
