Remarks & Notes
The first Empire State Express train from the New York Central, #999, is believed by many to have been the "first thing on wheels" to go over 100 mph. Railroad officials and newsmen timed the train at 112.5 mph going through the Village of Crittenden, NY (near Buffalo) on May 10th, 1893. At the time, there were 86" diameter drivers verses the 72" drivers that the engine had finished it's career with in 1952. The engine was presented to the Museum in 1962.
