Remarks & Notes
On a crisp Oct. 23, 1993, westbound CSX R135 was exiting Graham Tunnel and crossing the Potomac River from Maryland into West Virginia with four GP40-2s. Looking in the background at that code line up over the mountain makes me think about all the admiration I have for Signal Maintainers. I have yet to figure out how they get there under ideal conditions, much less in the dark of night, foul weather or both. I remember years ago speaking to a Maintainer here that relayed a story from some years before. One winters night, he tried to use the phone at Magnolia and found it was dead. He walked across the bridge at Magnolia, through the tunnel, and across the bridge here at Kesler. Upon hitting the ballast deck section, he thought he was off the bridge and took an immediate right. Mistake. He fell thirty some feet to the ground. Fortunately, daybreak came soon and a westbound saw him laying down in the snow that had broken his fall. They stopped, summoned help, and he got away with a broken collar bone.
