Who cares if 'back in the day' Sir Nigel Gresley's wonderful A4s were not native to the Settle & Carlisle route? Certainly his equally graceful A3 Pacifics briefly graced the line with their presence in the early 60s. Who can deny that 60009 looks magnificent (and sounded even better) as she positively hurtles up the grade three miles into the climb. Steam belongs in these landscapes rather than under the ugly overhead catenary that so desecrates the appearance of many main line routes.
