| A cold rain has turned to wet snow as a Cumbres and Toltec Scenic Railroad photo freight is on the eastern approach of Cumbres Pass, Colorado, on September 17, 1996. All former Rio Grande, Mikado K-37 No. 497 is the road engine, with Mikado K-27 No. 463, barely visible in the background, cut in the train ahead of the caboose. It’s still officially autumn, but winter can arrive early in the high country.
