| Remarks & Notes |
| This photo was taken by an L&N company photographer on a scenic stretch of main line near Artemus, KY. The river to the right is the division's namesake: the Cumberland. Baldwin-built "Big Emma" M-1 is "walkin' the dog" at 50 MPH or greater with a 9000-ton coal train bound for Corbin. At the time, the 68-mile stretch between Corbin and Loyall (actually Harlan Junction) was all double track. Between those two end points, it was unsignaled directional running, time table/train order territory. Several miles ahead, the 1955 will get an assist by a sister "Emma" up Emanual Hill, on the last lap into Corbin. |
