| Remarks & Notes |
| The southbound Loyall-Varilla mine run rear-ended a standing freight on the former double track on the north end of Loyall Yard on this foggy day in 1958. This was CTC territory, but the track on which this occurred was a long stretch of uncontrolled (no track occupancy shown) main from Wilhoit to Loyall. Under the rules, trains were (and still are today) obliged to operate at restricted speed (including the ability to stop short of an obstruction or another train). In this case, the mine run was running too fast (more than 15 MPH), and smacked the wooden cab--which then rode up on the RS-3s short hood. Since it was CTC territory, the flagman on the standing train was not required to follow Rule 99 (protect the rear of his train if stopped, or moving in a manner where it could be overtaken). Therefore, the fault was entirely placed on the engineer and crew of the mine run. After the normal investigation, a "vacation" followed. :) |
