Big day at Big Stone Gap: This is the first train to cross the just-completed $7M bridge and connection between the former L&N Cumberland Valley Division main to Norton, and the former Southern main at Big Stone Gap. This connection was part of a trackage rights swap involving both roads. Since this day in 1986, all CSX traffic has gone this way, allowing eventual sale and abandonment of nearly 12 miles of trackage through Appalachia to Norton. The train is powered by three Seaboard System SD50s. Two SD40-2s are shoving behind the caboose (yes, they still used cabooses at the time since Virginia had a statute on the books requiring them).
